Age and gender intersect and need to be considered together: the life course continues to be gendered, although in more subtle and indirect ways than in the past. Discussions need to be in the context of two major changes in society: increased life expectancy (and population aging, gender revolution. Birth control pill changed a lot of gender norms. Women were getting more education, controlling their biology. Our current older adults grew up with different expectations for women than us. Results in a challenge to norms and ideologies which leads to a structural lag. Marriage is decreasing and cohabitation is increasing. Fertility has gone down to below replacement rates: staying in school longer, having debt, delaying partnerships, by the time you can have kids you may not biologically be able to have as many as you want to.
