Four components: respect: listening, learning, value opinions, honesty: direction of the relationship, trust: develops over time, communications: be clear. Requires you to understand the emotion behind the information, not just the information itself. Combines a set of skills: nonverbal communication, attentive listening, managing stress, recognizing emotions. Not just understanding the information, but understanding how the speaker feels about what they"re communicating. This makes the speaker feel heard and understood. Creates an environment where everyone feels safe. Be aware of individual differences (cultural interpretations vary!) Remember to look at nonverbal signals as a group, do not just focus on a single gesture. Use body language to convey positive feeling. (even if you"re not feeling them).
