Zimmerman: the north american family is close to becoming a domesic insituion. The family insituion is bigger than the sum of its parts. Women have increased in the labour force: 42% in 1976, 63% in 2008. Increase in opportuniies for women: sector service, nonstandard work. The relaionship between work and family is dynamic and changes across the lifespan: young mothers returning to work, older men reiring and taking part in child care. Educaion is connected to a variety of advantages: economic well being, health and longer life span. Educaion is something we do early in life that impacts us later in life. Gender diference in the relaionship between educaion and the family: men become more atracive partners, women more likely to end up in a less lexible career. What are some of the things all the babies had in common in their lives: all the babies had access to western style medicine- except namibian.
