Early childhood period includes, roughly, the years from 2 to 6 and is often referred to as the preschool years. Early childhood is often termed magic years because limitations in children"s cognitions allow for magical beliefs and limit logical thinking. During early childhood, children begin to shed their babyness. Rate of growth is slower than during infancy, gains in height and gradual gains in weight result in children slimming out (or stretching up as some might describe! Brain undergoes significant development during this period, requiring adequate nutrition to support its optimal development. Dominant hand preferences emerge early in this period of development. Motor development results in greater coordination/precision in both gross motor and fine motor skills. Concerns during early childhood include the adequacy of nutrition, maltreatment, and injury. At this stage, children are in jean piaget"s stage of preoperational intelligence.
