Ex. modern day smartphone can accomplish far more than solely communication. Digital convergence: idea that eventually one will only need a single device for all digital media/internet/entertainment/communication needs. Signals have switched: devices have more or less changed from using analog signals to using digital signals. Ex. telephony, voice goes into microphone and is converted from an analog format to a digital format that the cellphone can process. Analog format = continuous stream of information (such as light and sound) Digital format = series of values that represent information. Digital format is easier to store and transmit. Music: level of sound is consistent intervals, repeated by playing those levels quickly in sequence. Photos: image divided into tiny regions (pixels) each assigned a particular colour together forming the larger image. Videos: work in the same way just color changes as video plays.
