Genetics: fundamental to life cell = fundamental unit of life haploid + haploid = diploid. Genomes are not deterministic: interaction of genomes w/ environment. Pop"n variation = substrate on which natural selection acts. At heart of genes & genetics: dna deoxyribonucleic acid; a polymer in which each subunit is composed of a phosphate group, a 5c sugar and a base. Dna strands are chemically polar; 5" end has a free phosphate group while 3" end has a free hydroxyl. Therefore, 56% leftover, 56/2=28% of each thymine & adenine.
