BIOL 1080 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Adaptive Immune System, Macrophage, Steatosis
Document Summary
Lecture 11 - local support and defense system. Non specific defenses sometimes called the innate immune system. Like the ccn of which it is a part, the lsds is always on, always doing multiple tasks. To view the immune response as waiting and watching for invaders in the healthy adult is a na ve viewpoint. First line of defense (physical): epithelial barriers + washing away pathogens leaving human microbiome behind. Tears: wash away irritating substances and microbes, lysozyme kills many bacteria. Skin: physical barrier to the entrance of microbes, acidic ph discourages the growth of organisms, sweat and oil gland secretions kill many bacteria. Large intestine: normal bacteria inhabitants keep invaders in check. Respiratory tract: mucus traps organisms and cilia sweeps away those. Saliva: washes microbes from the teeth and mucous membranes of mouth organisms. Defensive processes 4 cardinal signs of inflammation. Redness: blood flow carries defensive cells and chemicals to damaged tissues and removes toxins.
