Fieldwork is designed to answer an anthropologist"s question gathering data first hand. Participant observation: hedican - firsthand technique; a process of immersion in the daily activities in the field. Living in and studying another culture over an extended period of time. Involves participation and observation recorded in field notes; remain aware. Barbara monsey"s vending machine study: student"s interaction with vending machines. A part of corporate anthropology biggest employers of anthropologists huge companies i. e. vending machine makers. Hard to record all that you see. See first hand what people are doing as opposed to heresay. Biases can start to develop going native ; stop critically observing. You might influence those around you; may not act accurately with you there. Lots of data (messy, lots of time to sort out & piece together) Small sample size; skewed picture of what happens in the community. What people within a group think about their own lives/culture.
