Lots of data hard to find out what is relevant. + going native getting too close (fatigue) Not always right but has more validity. Phon etic s study of the sounds of all languages. Phon emic s study of the sounds of a particular language. Social world is patterned, orderly, governed by laws. Real world that we can describe less relevant. But human life is messy, rules can"t contain it. ** we need emic perspectives as well but we need the etic perspectives in order to make comparisons.
