Control theories have lots of empirical support and they have been used in other areas such as psychology, which accounts for the many versions of the concept (ie there are many types of control theories) Marginal to criminology because they seem simplistic, and are often perceived as supporting high levels of discipline, regulation and punishment. Other theories about crime and deviance state that there has to be some additional trait or experience held by criminals and deviants. Central assumption behind control theories is that deviance is due to the absence of control or restraint. Travis hirschi: social bonding restrains most people from crime, in other words, delinquency is the result of a lack of bonding. 4 components of a person"s bond to society. How well people are to other conformists. Person with more close attachments have high attachment score. Quality of being involved in pro-social behaviour.
