KNES 260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Aorta, Soft Palate, Paranasal Sinuses
Document Summary
Respiratory system gets o2 from external environment, brings it into body and allows cardiovascular system to take that o2 throughout our body for cells to use. Then we want to expel co2 out of the body so the respiratory system allows for the exchange between the air (o2) coming in with co2 from the body. Respiratory system protects itself (thoracic cage, pulmonary cavity, pleural cavity, pleural viscera) because we know that we need o2 and the main job of this system is to get that o2. If one lobe collapses there are still other lobes that ensure we get the o2. Important for production of sound, because we are moving air through the larynx and with the movements of vocal ligaments and cords we produce sounds. Olfactory sensations because the nose is part of the respiratory system. Protection over top and surrounding the respiratory system is provided by the thoracic cage.
