In contemporary sociology of sexuality, the constructionist perspective dominates! Interactionist perspective addresses the processes by which ppl come to understand and attribute meaning to their own sexuality and the sexuality of others. Critical perspective analyzes the ways that power influences ppl"s understandings and attributions of meaning. The power-reflexive work is emphasized in that it is considered by many to be at the core of the contemporary sociological studies of sexuality. Elite discourse = the knowledge about sexuality that is conveyed by those in authority and that subsequently comes to be perceived as truth. Distinction bw sexual behavior and sexual identity these 2 don"t necessarily correspond. One can do a behavior, and not perceive that behavior to be an essential component of oneself. Science of psychology"s existence of the self in late 19th century homosexual identities became possible. Elite discourses placed boundaries around what individuals in those cultures perceive as being acceptable, normal, or even possible.
