Document Summary
Positivism: based on something that can be objectively studied. Functionalist, learning theories, and social control theories the three types all focus on the act of deviance. The ultimate end goal of these positivist theories = social control/how we should be dealing with these acts of deviance. Created by the group/place in which it exists. Social typing process is important how people/things get defined as deviant (description, prescription, social control) Interpretive theories: these theories focus on, perceptions and reactions. Assumption: we develop understanding and attribute meaning to the world and to ourselves based on the interactions we have with others. We act on the basis of our subjective interpretation of it, we also act on the basis of our own subjection perceptions and understanding of something as unique individuals. Looking-glass self: we see ourselves as rejection of how we think others sees us and evaluate us.
