Allows scientists to predict and explain natural phenomena. Not just a guess; well substantiated explanation. Social sciences: psychology, economics- tries to come up with this rigorous protocol, all social sciences flawed- often fail to reach the standards we have for the natural sciences, sociology. Sociological theory is not theory in the scientific sense. Not about the explanation, about the interpretation of the social phenomena. Non-explanatory discourse- (cid:449)e"re after conceptualizations of a more philosophical nature; not just there to explain and predict. Not completely objective; think about the implication of things. Atavists- in early criminological theories, the view that criminals were evolutionary thro(cid:449)(cid:271)a(cid:272)ks (cid:449)hose (cid:271)iolog(cid:455) pre(cid:448)e(cid:374)ted the(cid:373) fro(cid:373) (cid:272)o(cid:374)for(cid:373)i(cid:374)g to so(cid:272)iet(cid:455)"s rules. Theories that focus on the power relations that underlie the creation of social rules, and that have an interest in emancipation and social justice. People who adopt this perspective are after critique of the social: critical theorists are driven to seek human emancipation from oppression.
