A small device is used to emit a loud, unique neutral stimulus that is emitted for a very short duration. Through classical conditioning, stimulus becomes associated with paired rewards. Used as a substitute for primary reinforcer. Conditioned (secondary) reinforcer: a stimulus that becomes an effective reinforcer because of its association with a primary or unconditioned reinforcer (e. g. , food) Marking procedure: instrumental response is immediately followed by a distinctive event that makes the instrumental response more memorable, marks response for animal, expands temporal gap. Classically condition the clicker using a highly motivating unconditioned stimulus (ex. food reward) Important to ensure the click immediately precedes the food reward. Continue to pair the click with the treat in this manner over many exposures. Conditioning likely has taken place when the animal shows a startle or alerting response to the click sound: orienting response. Begin varying the temporal relationship between the click and the treat.
