Motives - propel people to act a certain way. Motivation - a force that energizes and directs behaviour - produce goal directed behaviour. People are pushed to achieve homeostasis (ex. Too much arousal improved performance poor performance. External factors pull people to do things - create a drive state. A reward is presented after an action/event with the intent to encourage re- occurrence of that behaviour. Incentive - external stimulus/rewards that doesn"t relate directly to biological needs. Both play into the probability of behaviour. Both are, however, one may be more important during a certain times in one"s life. Must meet the needs on the bottom before you can move onto the next level. Hunger is a basic drive state - provides energy. Food intake is determined by short term cues (hunger and satiety) and long term factors (body fat) Link between heightened arousal/negative emotion and overeating. Evidence in adoption studies and twin studies.
