Document Summary

Psych 105: individual and social behaviour (08th february 2019)- lecture 15. Children have a predisposed ability to learn certain things. 18-24 months after birth is called infancy. At birth, all sensory systems (sight, smell, hearing) are activated and it is almost like a chaos for the baby. Babies respond to stimuli selectively- to stimuli that allow them to learn and survive better. Babies gaze longer at objects are unknown (new stimuli) as they actively try to learn about their surroundings and the environment. Babies, when habituated to the stimuli, don"t gaze at it anymore. Moreover, they remember the object and don"t gaze at it if it is presented before them later in time. Infants are more likely to respond to mobile objects that they can control with their hands than mobile objects controlled by machines. Infants when given the opportunity to pull a string to turn on a light were bored eventually.
