A statistic is an estimate of some population parameter (characteristic) that is calculated from data obtained from a sample. In stats, we are interested in describing concepts and examining relationships between concepts in a population: concepts are hard to study so we define them to make it easier, defined concepts are called variables. Describe data, measures of data (central tendency, sd etc. ) How variables in your data relate to each other, associations. Qualitative variable something you can see, touch, feel. Quantitative variable putting a number to the quality. Variables can be continuous or categorical: continuous variable can take on an infinite number of possible values (continuum, categorical & discrete variables have a finite number of groups (tall vs not tall) Independent variable: x-axis (causal factor) dependent variable: y-axis (outcome) Ex: smoking causes lung cancer; smoking is causal factor / x-variable and lung cancer is outcome / y-variable.
