Dsm-v: impaired control, social impairment, risky use, pharmacology, only recognizes gambling disorder. Intoxication: maladaptive behaviours resulting from physiologic effects of the specific substance on the cns. Withdrawal: maladaptive behaviours resulting from the cessation or reduction of substance use, which can be life threatening (e. g. medications, alcohol, opioids) Tolerance: increasing need for the substance to achieve the same reward. Detoxification: systematic withdrawal from a substance which is done in a medical setting, which helps to manage withdrawal. Dependence: changes in the body due to continued use of a substance (can be dependent without being addicted) prednisone stops the body from producing endogenous cortisol. Addiction and mental health conditions or medical comorbidities. Precontemplation: no awareness or intent to change behaviour. Contemplation: aware of the need to change behaviour, planning for change but not committed to it. Preparation: begin to plan for change and commitment to follow it. Maintenance: trying to prevent the end of change.
