BIOL208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Vapor Pressure, Relative Humidity, Microclimate
Document Summary
Bio 208 lecture 8 wednesday, january 24, 2018. Temperature constraints aren"t really problems in themselves, but the concern is presence of water. It"s not the heat that kills you : it"s the dehydration. Increases in temperature outside of an organism"s tolerance doesn"t kill them, it"s usually the dehydration. Is dependent on temperature: warmer = more water content in the air, water can move in aquatic environments via concentration gradients. It wants to equilibrate: wet dry, low salinity high salinity, textbook refers to water concentration instead of solute concentration. Isosmotic: organisms with body fluids containing the same concentration of water as the environment: hyperosmotic: lower water concentration in body than the environment, high solute, hyposmotic: higher water concentration in body than the environment, low solute. Isosmotic: same inside and out, not much flux between the inside and outside. Hyperosmotic: higher solutes in the body, low osmotic concentration, water moves in easily, salts want to diffuse out.
