Not a monophyletic group

Lack true vascular tissues – limits their size

Most tissues are only one or two cells thick

Very thin, ground hugging plants

Haploid (1n) gametophytes are the most conspicuous, dominant phase of the life cycle

oDiploid only present for a part of the time

Often entire plants are either male or female

oMust live in moist places

oSperm swim through water film to fertilize eggs

oNOT fully terrestrial yet
