Document Summary

Bryophytes lack true vascular tissue which limits their size, most of their tissues are only one or a few cells thick. Haploid gametophytes are the most conspicuous dominant phase of the life cycle. Diploid sporophytes are smaller and are present only part of the time. Often entire plants are either male or female, and the sperm swim through the water lm to fertilize eggs, which is why they live in moist areas, so they are not fully terrestrial. Vascular plants: they have vascular tissue, which is the xylem and phloem. The xylem carries water and minerals up and act as supports. Xylem are dead hollow cells (tracheids), and phloem are living cells. Xylem contains lignin which is a strengthening polymer. Vascular tissue gave plants a competitive advantage, they have the ability to resist gravity and grow taller, which means that they get more sunlight. Vascular plants have a complex root system and a multicellular leaves system.
