Document Summary

Biol 108 - lecture #17 - fungi pt. Fungi that parasitize vertebrates: mycosis: fungal disease of humans, vertebrates. Can infect terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates hosts: types of infection. Cutaneous: infection on outer layers of skin. Causes a ring-shaped growth pattern of hyphae. The wound is exposed to environmental spores and so cause an infection. Opportunistic fungal diseases: some fungi actually live relatively peacefully everywhere in the body. Yeast: common member of gut microflora and moist epithelia (usually harmless) Can colonize skin"s surface under humid conditions (eg. diaper rash) Can colonize mucous membrane if normal microflora are absent, or if chemical conditions change. Also if natural microflora are killed, this makes spaces for others. More human fungal diseases to take over: histoplasmosis: most common systemic mycosis in n. a. Can also be cutaneous: sometimes fungi can go from hyphae ==> yeast. This allows the yeast to invade host cells. Eventually results in systemic infection and host death.
