Sociology 2410 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Golda Meir, Masculinity, Male Privilege
Document Summary
With a social constructionist model there are four basic rules. Masculinity and femininity vary from culture to culture. Masculinity and femininity within a culture can vary over time. Gender can vary within an individual over the course of their lifetime as well. Men and women tend to not worry so much about how they look and their femininity or masculinity, as they have already achieved this in their lifetime. This stresses the institutional forces that help to contribute to gender, as it analyzed power relations. This understands that not everybody learns the same things about something. There are disadvantages and advantages for certain groups. The advantages for men outweigh the advantages for women. Sex role theory (srt) also argues that gender is learned. It is interested in understanding how people learn gender and how they come to terms with gender rules. They are not always conscious decisions, but they are deeply imbedded.
