Sociology 2410 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Masculinity, Upper Class, Femininity
Document Summary
Process by which we learn the ways of a society and or group so we can function within it. To function successfully as gendered beings within our society. Girls are encouraged to develop interpersonal and social skills. Boys are encouraged to have control over their emotions. Competition, aggression, pride, anger, etc, are seen as acceptable masculine expressions. They are taught that they are supposed to be the bread winners. Assumption is that lesbian or single-mother families operate from deficit, as boys don"t have someone that they can learn male roles from. A man is thus necessary to convey masculinity to children - this is not what happens at all. The irony in this is that male only family are seen as pathological for different reasons. This is where ill effects do occur in gender socialization. They are the result of poverty, not the lack of male in the female.
