Document Summary
Martin luther king jr and non violent protest. The south was not segregated in slavery, because slavery itself provided a sufficient distinction between races, and slave holders wanted to use them in all tasks, therefore, it didn"t fit them to separate blacks and whites. With the end of slavery, whites had to find another means to set themselves apart from blacks. This was achieved through control and segregation of public places. This included restricting access to education, transportation, and any sort of public service. Some areas of life weren"t so clearly segregated. So when it was useful, whites and blacks would come together. It can be seen as a desire for whites to control african americans and their access to public spaces and resources. It is also important to remember that it was achieved with consent of the legal system. In 1883, the supreme court threw out the supreme court act of 1875.
