If freedom of the individual and equality are key social values in western society, then what jusiies the diferent forms of gender or racial inequaliies: where does inequality come from. Reason #1: biology determines our gender roles, women as nurturers; men as leaders, society best organized in gendered spheres (private and public) Division of labour between men and women is natural and not imposed: but why is nurturing work unpaid or poorly paid, dependency on the man (especially economically) Reason #2: gendered socializaion, boys and girls internalize gender role expectaions. Gendered occupaions: perform gender roles in relaionships (men are doctors, women are nurses: socializaion maintains inequality, it does not explain the cause of inequality, soluion is therefore to give girls boy" toys and vice versa. Reason #3: structural condiions, radical feminism: patriarchy is a sex class system of male power. Sustained through law and culture: socialist feminism: intersecion of class and gender.
