PSYC 3530H Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Environmental Quality, Prenatal Care
Document Summary
Bleuler coined schizophrenias involving disturbances in reality. Most seen in adults but a small number of cases were found to begin in childhood. Kanner and asperger"s findings led to autism spectrum disorder. Kanner saw more in terms of autism, whereas asperger"s saw more in terms of aspergers. 1970s: it showed a distinction between early onset (before age three), decrease in childhood, then increase in adolescent/early adulthood onset leading researchers to believe there were two different disorders with some similar features. Characterized by impairments in: social interaction: unable to pick up on social cues, acts differently. Difficulties with social subtleties: communication: may show mutism, repeating of things they have heard. Poor pragmatics (social context): restricted, repetitive, stereotyped behaviour and interests: behaviour that is repeated. Sensorimotor behaviours (hand flapping, toe walking, self- injurious behaviour). Insistence on sameness (routines, items facing the same way, can be upset by things out of order).
