Document Summary
Generalizations of terror & terrorism: terror is not new. It is not comprehensive: there have been many significant turning points, eg. Seen as necessary in french revolution, benefit to the revolutionaries: eg. Irish famine terror seen as beneficial for them to gain independence: eg. Recent suicide bombs are a significant turning point. It always changes, and will continue to change: terror takes many different forms, can be unpredictable or planned, can be broadly supported (eg. Fenians, spanish civil war) or attributed to only disturbed individuals (eg. Hitler, lepine: could be seen originally as more humane (kingston penitentiary, wwi unexpected horror of trenches) Lynching a deliberate tactic to show power of whites: causes of terror, unintended consequences, many are deliberate, fear of unknown is common, eg. Witches and satan are the explanations since natural explanations could not be found (supernatural must be to blame: eg. Columbus: each side had no idea of what to expect of the other.
