In this last chapter, we will look at some of the reasons why humans are threatening so many species on. Earth, and explore some of the ways in which these threats can be reduced. Explain how sustainable development can benefit humans and biodiversity. Concept: human activities threaten earth"s biodiversity. You were introduced to the concept of genetic diversity in chapter 23. Species diversity: the variety of different species in an ecosystem. There are the introduced species that we know of as invasive. For example, they cannot withstand a disease outbreak or it becomes too difficult for them to find a mate. Acid rain is briefly discussed in this section as a classical example of global change. Concept: population conservation focuses on population size, genetic diversity and critical habitat. Small- population approach: not all small populations are doomed.
