Document Summary

Simple squamous: very thin, look like fried eggs, found in capillaries, good for filtration, simple diffusion. Simple cuboidal: 1 cell layer thick, kidney nephrons, good for filtration. Simple columnar: tall, found in small intestine, good for secretion, uses gradient system, easy because it is so tall. Ciliated pseudostratified columnar: nuclei appear to be in 2 layers, but all cells touch basement membrane, found in trachea *** Stratified squamous epithelium: multiple layers, vaginal wall, skin, skin has keratinized (dead) surface cells, left on the surface for preservation of water. Stratified cuboidal: rare, found in ducts, usually only 2 layers. Stratified columnar: rare, found in lining of pharynx, tall cells, usually 2 layers, usually not ciliated. Transitional epithelium: technically stratified, found in the urinary tract (including bladder, when bladder is relaxed, cells appear to be stratified cuboidal, when bladder is full, cells appear to be stratified squamous. Connective tissue: most abundant and widely distributed tissue.
