Learning process involving development/changes in individual"s sense of self. Primary socialization - socialization occurring in childhood. Secondary socialization - socialization occurring later in life. Refers to degree to which person"s behavior, attitudes, other personal characteristics determined/caused by specific factor. Softer sides - pinpointing genes and determining characteristics. States that greater part of who we are - determined by roughly 26,000 genes. We are too complex to be reduced down to genes. Behaviorism - school of thought in psychology taking strong cultural determinist position. Behaviorists believe that almost any behavior can be taught & learned. Much of who we are, behaviorists would argue, is consequence of how previous behavior was reinforced. Thought individual agency count for very little. If you do something & it is rewarded, likelihood of doing it again increases, behavior is reinforced. If you do something & it is punished/ignored, likelihood of doing it again decreases. Thought humans could be trained to do anything w/ positive rewards.
