Proximally: relationships, practices, beliefs, values individualism/ collectivism. Dotted large circle: others can move between the boundary of ingroup and outgroup. Dotted small circle: identity of the interdependent person is experienced depending on the situations. The self concept holds a privileged position in psychology . Individualism indeed is rising, but cultural differences remain sizable (linked to changes in socioeconomic development, less shift in pathologen prevalence and disaster) First-generation college students (working class) vs continuing-generation american college students (middle class) There are many social norms that people are supposed to abide by this country.
