Psyc 379 - week 5-1: assessing intimate partner violence. Prevalence: estimates of spousal violence range from 12 to 50% of violent crime reported to police in canada, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men report being a victim of and perpetrating intimate partner violence. Not necessarily the same people; however some violence is bi- directional. Men are often larger than their spouses and are likely to cause serious harm. Risk of serious harm: of female homicide victims killed by intimate partner, other mental health consequences. Recidivism: intimate partner violence may be repeated or even occur daily, unlike most other violence. Risk factors for ipv (male perpetrator and female victim) Previous relational aggression/ipv: verbal/emotional abuse, bidirectional ipv. Demographic characteristics: younger age, ses factors. Psychological characteristics: anger, hostility, jealously, fear of abandonment, attitudes that are tolerant to intimate partner violence. Psychopathology: depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse. Alcohol abuse: borderline personality disorder, self-reported distress.
