How physically close a person is to us has an influence on who we find attractive. The more we see and interact with people, the more likely they are to become our friends and lovers. Occurs at many levels: it works in macro and micro levels (can be unconscious) In the college experiment: 65% mentioned people in the same building as close friends. Proximity leads to attraction because of the mere exposure effect. Only applies if you like or are neutral to the stimulus to start: if you don"t like it, mere exposure has adverse effect. Internet does play an important role in maintaining a friendship whether it was formed offline or online. Social compensation hypothesis: lonely introverts who lack social skills of forming friendships face-to-face form online friendships. People tend to disclose more and get more intimidate when forming a relationship online.
