Importance: fundamental and universal aspect of human nature, people have a very strong need to belong (not just relationships, but family, friends, pets, etc. ) Challenge: love is pretty difficult to study, few studies because random assignment is unethical for love ie: u can"t randomly assign people to sexual orientations and then measure them (hallmark of experimental method) What leads to attraction: proximity: the more we see and interact with people, the more likely they are to become our friends or lovers. Aka propinquity effect, also functional distance is a place where people bump into each other and have a chance to interact and form friendships. Proximity leads to attraction because of the exposure effect, more exposure = more liking (moreland and beach 1992 study), female confederate went to class 0,5,10, or. 15 times and she would sit in front of the class.
