Why we need analytic methods in this course. Asking empirical (testable) questions require systematic ways of analyzing data. Analysis is guided by 1) theory 2) models 3) established methods of data collection. Thematic analysis = finding trends or reoccurring themes in written text (eg. social media posts, twitter, newspaper stories, headlines) How is greta thunberg"s identity constructed by american conservative and liberal newspapers (online) headlines: collect the data. Read carefully and note the dates, source, writer: code/label the data. Highlight specific words, phrases that are used that stand out, represent a tone or attitude. Go through data colour coding similar types of words, phrases.
