Public health: promoting good health, awareness, and prevention. Core disciplines of public health: biostatistics, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, health policy management, social and behavioral sciences. Public health = prevention > upstream ideology (eliminating the root cause of the disease/eradicating disease to prevent epidemics) Essential functions: population health assessments, health surveillance, health promotion, disease prevention, health protection. Public health achievements: vaccination, safer environments and foods, family planning, clean drinking water, etc. Primary: stop the development of disease before it occurs (prevention) Secondary: early detection of disease; prevents disease complications (detection) Tertiary: eliminate or reduce disability and symptoms associated with disease (treatment)
