Theories of moral development and parenting styles provide further insight regarding the importance of fostering self-discipline in children. Chapters 10 and 11 in the textbook offer many practical tips for classroom interventions. Those of you interested in pursuing future work with children will likely find these strategies particularly helpful. Harvard professor lawrence kohlberg started as a developmental psychologist and then moved into the area of moral education. His theory was largely based on jean piaget"s work on cognitive development and as such, is a stage theory. In other word, kohlberg believed that people progress in their moral reasoning judgments about right and wrong through a series of stages.
