Their interactions with others constitute a major role in their development and adjustment to school. As educators, counsellors, or other child care professionals, it is imperative that we do our utmost to foster children"s development of social competence. Your reading for this unit (chapter 1) focuses on what social competence is, how it is demonstrated, and the contexts in which it develops. These include (but are not limited to) family settings, communities, and neighbourhoods; child care centres and school environments; and broader historical, cultural, and political contexts. Many educators, counsellors, and child care professionals are committed to making a positive impact in children"s lives. Through their daily encounters with children, such professionals have a unique opportunity to support children"s healthy social development. Demonstrating warmth, acceptance, genuineness, empathy, and respect, communicates to children that they are valued and provides the foundation for successful teaching. Working with children as a professional also entails specialized knowledge and competence.
