Diversion programs exist at the following stages: Objective: to keep offenders from being processed further into the system. Labelling theory: they begin to see themselves as deviant and they start to identify themselves as the labels. Require offenders acknowledge responsibility and fulfill certain requirements within a specified time. Net-widening: when more people are taken into the system than otherwise would"ve been (e. g. where they could"ve gotten a warning from the police and been sent home) Provides for supervision of offender in the community, by a probation officer. Some sentences require an offender is placed on probation. Probation (provincial offenders) vs. parole provincial, territorial, federal. Can be used in conjunction with confinement vs. conditional release. Breach of probation can result in a charge under the criminal code requires evidence of conviction. Breach of parole can result in return to prison. Keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
