Document Summary
Semiotics tells us things we already know in a language we will never understand. Semiotics is foundational to understanding to one of the most fundamental parts of communication: meaning. But yet, semiotics as an approach can study physics or mathematics: semioticians realized that what they needed to do was study the signs that can go into sign systems, the codes in which sign studies are organized. Mathematics is made up of signs it"s a sign system: semioticians are interested that, words are meaningful they have semantic potential. That they"re powerfully referential they refer to ideas, people, etc. : you"re not just speaking english, you"re an english speaker that"s a social role. Meaning that english speakers and those who understand it form a community of english-using people. That means we think about the world in which english-speaking people think about the world.
