Paddy whannel -> semiotics tells us things we already know in a language we will never understand. The study of signs and sometimes the science of signs. 3 part system -> asking about sign, ___, asking how question is relevant. Umberto eco -> semiotics is concerned with everything that can be taken as a sign. Jonathan culler -> whatever area he is working in, someone adopting the semiotic perspective attempts to make explicit the implicit knowledge which enables people within a given society to understand one"s behavior. Behavior = consequence of reading signs correctly. Marcel danesi -> the science of produced meaning. The ultimate goal of semiotics is, in fact, to unavel the meanings that are built into all kinds of human products, from words, symbols, narratives, symphonies, paintings, & comic books to scientific theories and mathematical theorems. We study signs to understand the procedures & rules governing their formation.
