Theor etical per spectives on m edia content. This chapter exam ines a num ber of different theories and perspectives on m edia content. The study of the creation and interpretation of m edia content is the study of r epr esentation , or, as the sem ioticians would classify it, signification. Such study exam ines how sym bols, such as the words and ideas contained in language, are constructed and used to interpret the world of objects, events, persons, and representation in general. Several approaches to m edia content are considered in the chapter: literary critic- ism ; structuralism , sem iotics, and post-structuralism ; discourse analysis; critical political econom y; content analysis; and genre/m edia for m analysis. Each has particular strengths and focuses upon various forces playing on content. The m edia are an integral elem ent of our society, bound through the inter- penetration of m edia content and lived reality.
