Film genre: from french = kind , sort , type . Different genres often assessed/identified by different criteria. Iconography: recurring symbol, images that carry meaning from film to film and function as a form of short hand . White cowboy hat means the character is good; assumed knowledge of genre. Violation of conventions: can offer something fresh and unexpected. 4 influences: war and post-war disillusionment, postwar realism: after war, people done with escapism, german expressionism: filmmakers come to hollywood and bring influences with them, the hard-boiled tradition: detective fiction; rough-tough exterior detective with soft centre.
