Auteur criticism: focuses on singularities (what makes the film unique to one artistic personality, find the fingerprints of the artist in the movie. Focuses on similarities in narrative structure that connect this film to other examples. Look at the films from the way the artist portrays the genre compared to other artists. In literature, genres are defined by structure. Sonnet, ode, ballad, novel, short essay, essay, etc. In cinema, genre is defined by content. Western, detective, musical, gangster, horror, drama, action, romance, etc. Film genres cannot be devised or created to order. Film genres are developed through the interaction of films, audiences, filmmakers. Film genres are never fixed, but always developing. Attributes of film genres ( the same, only slightly different) Dramatic short-cut, intelligibility, focus on style, mass production, promotion. Location, period, visual iconography, characters, plot structure. Themes and motifs of specific genres relate to each genre"s particular conventions.
