Document Summary
People within the family were related by blood or legal ties. You were always understood to be family members by a narrow concept. Genealogy and legal ties were indicated family ties. At some times people were married to people of the same blood type. It had implications on your life; inheritance and who has control over you. Reason for marriage until 1960s and 1970s was because their spouse died. In 1950s there was a rigid understanding between gender roles. People needed to remarry to fulfill the gender roles (caring mother and working father). Today the reason people remarry is due more to divorce rather than death. Children from first marriage have no blood or legal ties to new children/step children. When people of the lgbt community, when they came out, family cut them off. They created a social support system that resulted in their own new family. A family that gives support, helps decision-making, financial help, etc.
