Document Summary

Lecture 4: patriarchy, masculinity, and male violence (separate issues) ***most of these theories are useless, do not use for essay. Theories on why men abuse: social psychological, mainstream sociological theories. Power and control: the trend of male violence. Why do abused women stay: social psychological, mainstream sociological, feminist. Two biggest theories are radical feminists/power and control theory and male support theories (they are opposing) Ignores societal influences that shape that individual: that the individual is mentally ill. Major issue: with the expectation of feminist theory (incl. male peer support) only look at statistics: which is problematic because only thing that is considered violence is physical violence. Same with psychological and social psychological theories. Begi(cid:374) fro(cid:373) that this perso(cid:374)"s (cid:271)eha(cid:448)iour is (cid:374)ot (cid:374)or(cid:373)al (cid:894)the(cid:455) are (cid:373)e(cid:374)tall(cid:455) ill(cid:895) Wo(cid:373)e(cid:374)"s la(cid:272)k of po(cid:449)er fa(cid:272)ilitates male violence. All begin with only looking at statistics which is not accurate whatsoever: only look at physical violence and physical manifestation, only look at what is reported.
