SOC 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Traditional Authority, Industrial Revolution
Document Summary
Post-secondary education has become market oriented-the emphasis is geared toward the market. The problem with this is if the market changes, there will be difficulties finding a job ex: teachers. There is an increase in tuition prices due to less public funds and more emphasis on the private sector. Who you are as an individual is linked to society, you can"t look a problem individually but you have to look at it as a whole and focus on society"s structure. Social structure make up of institutions that organize our interactions. Culture is the content that fill up the structure. Power is achieved through the control of resources of value. Markets, weapons, media, law, votes, workers, consumers. Larger, invisible power that you don"t see everyday. Ex: people having to have 2 jobs to get by, less full-time jobs. Social interaction is mapped out according to statuses that we attain and roles that we occupy.
