Social structures made up of insituions that organize/ manage/ discipline our interacions. Culture is the content that ills up the structure: beliefs, norms, values, acions. Power: ability to achieve your will despite resistance of others: achieved through the control of resources of value. Market, weapons, media, law, votes, workers, consumers and status, freedom, self-determinaion. Proximal power: family, peer groups, teachers: food, clothing, shelter, idenity, safety. Distal power: insituions, statuses, norms: cannot see to oppose. Lack of social control (true democracy, no police constantly in the street) Social interacion is mapped out according to statuses that we atain and roles that we occupy: social idenity and power. Personal power relects statuses and roles are valued and rewarded: sigmaized and punished. Norms (rules of behavior) are context speciic: elevators and batle ields. Human behavior is paterned and predictable: non-conformity (rule breaking) is necessary. European context: rise of natural sciences: systemaic study of an observable reality.
